The Exotic World of Paisley Babylon DJ Mix

The-Exotic-World-of-DJ-Pais

I love all sorts of sounds, and the more exotic ones rarely get a look in by typical DJs unless there’s a special night going on somewhere or private party in need of a worldly mash-up of Stereolab, Bossa Nova, dub reggae, Theivery Corporation, Chris Joss, disco, Piero Piccioni, Alan Hackshaw, Gorillaz, Gerard Heinz, Can, and many others. I decided it was high time this kind of listening experience got its due on the DJ decks and I’m making the journey available for parties, clubs and events.

I present to you a very heady cocktail of classy, exotic and easy-on-the-ears sounds in this mix, The Exotic World of DJ Paisley Babylon. Please feel free to click the image or the text to begin your listening experience.

Once upon a time, some of this music was the soundtrack for the international jet set, at work and at play on board the Concorde, at the clothes-optional beaches in Europe, and the martini parties of the NYC art crowd. Some of it brings back a feeling of cool tropical breezes, other tunes remove you to the balcony of a high-rise condo overlooking the New York skyline or the disco parapets of Italy. This is fantasy music–created especially to make us forget about whatever mundane things clouded our day when the sun was still shining. This is nighttime music.

I am taking gigs–both club nights and private events–featuring these sounds and much more. If you like what you hear in this collection, please get in touch to arrange an event or party. I’d be happy to create sonic atmospheres like these for you.

I also spin other genres and soundscapes; stay tuned for The Strange World of DJ Paisley Babylon featuring Coil, Nurse With Wound, Current 93 and related artists, plus an all horror-related collection of soundtrack sounds from the great Italian fright films of the 60s, 70s and 80s.

Paisley Babylon Jet Set 60s Modern

DJ Paisley Babylon

I’ve worked under my own name and as DJ Paisley Babylon behind the decks in one form or another since 1987. I got my start working in radio as a midnight-to-6AM disk jockey in central Illinois, and briefly ran a mobile DJ service before I joined the Air Force in 1991. I’ve DJed all over the world since then thanks to my military career–everywhere from Japan to Iceland. As you’ll read in my newly added bio, I took some time off in 2005 but have returned to DJing once more here in Chicago and beyond.

I am back in the game and happy to spin sounds ranging from disco, New Wave, electronica, Chicago industrial and 80s/90s derivatives, strange genre-bending combinations of all of the above. I also spin soundtrack sounds from the 60s and 70s–you haven’t lived til you’ve heard Morricone, Bruno Nicolai, Goblin, Claudio Simonetti and other luminaries mixed with Big Audio Dynamite, Beck, Clash and others.

I am currently available for bookings–call (312) 504-1264 for details or drop me an e-mail to jwallace (at) turntabling d0t net. I am available for events, club bookings, parties, etc. I have an extensive library of the above genres and also have plenty of rare vinyl–especially the horror-related material, new wave, and what I call “unheard” music.

I’m based in Chicago but am available to travel. My schedule does require some notice for cross country travel–for best results on either coast, please call at least seven days in advance. Midwest-based gigs are easier to schedule with short notice.

I have PA gear suitable for medium-sized rooms–typical club/band performance spaces or smaller. Please contact me directly for rates and availability. If you’re curious to hear what I’m currently spinning, please download this DJ mix I did as a promo giveaway for HorrorHound 2009 in Indianapolis at the Turntabling.net booth. I have more mixes coming to this space soon.

Thanks for reading!

Joe Wallace/DJ Paisley Babylon

DJ Paisley Babylon Spins Zombie Disco 2 July 24 @Lucky Number Grill Chicago

Zombie Disco 2

It’s true–Zombie Disco 2 is a DJ Paisley Babylon night of evil disco treats. While it’s true that HorrorSociety.com has me listed as DJ Joe Wallace instead of the more wildly exciting name I DJ under these days, it’s still a DJ Paisley Babylon gig, make no mistake.

It’s true that I do gigs more or less by word of mouth–I prefer to be more selective about my gigs–I do pimp myself out from time to time for cash. As it happens, right after Zombie Disco 2, I have some availability, so if you’re looking for something different than what the club kids are spinning, do drop a line. You can download a 40-minute long sample of the sonic madness I conjure up to see what all the fuss is about. Not much disco on this one, I’m afraid, but I do have a large library of the stuff. I also have a massive amount of retro 60s/70s lounge, 80s electronica & new wave, trippy shagadelic music (look out, Austin Powers!) and a huge catalog of dub.

Back to Zombie Disco 2–it’s July 24 2010 at the Lucky Number Grill. Get advance tix or pay a tenner at the door. See you there!
