Paisley Babylon: Sexy Hangover

Here’s an excerpt from a new, longish Paisley Babylon track called “Sexy Hangover”. Fans of Nurse With Wound, Coil, the more ambient selections from Nine Inch Nails’ The Fragile, and Eno should be able to find something to love about this.

Recorded in Chicago, Illinois, this new Paisley Babylon track is part of a new release that combines soundtrack sounds, electronica, loop-based live performances, 80s industrial, and mid-period Eno. Stay tuned for more–there is PLENTY to come.

Theremin Vs. Turntable: Paisley Babylon Equipment Test

Just as with my former fellow bandmates in Crevice, when it’s time to do Paisley Babylon stuff in the rehearsal space, it’s an EQUIPMENT TEST rather than a rehearsal. Well, perhaps that’s not ENTIRELY true–Paisley Babylon does have an improvisational aspect to it but it’s not ALL off-the-cuff…plenty of structure hiding in there.

Here’s one shot recently with the new theremin. Paisley Babylon’s gear list for this video includes a portable, battery operated turntable with a vinyl LP of DJ battle breaks supplying the drum track, all other noises produced by theremin and MicroKorg.

Paisley Babylon Single: The Phoenix Lights

May 2, 2012 Blog No Comments

Written as a soundtrack piece (hence the repetitive theme that basically tries to pummel you into submission as you listen), the new Paisley Babylon MP3 THE PHOENIX LIGHTS, is a SkinnyPuppy-inspired track which does not yet have a home.

But there is some video work being shot in the Paisley Babylon studio that could act as a vehicle for it soon unless someone scoops it up in the meantime.

This track was inspired by a conversation with Nivek Ogre of Skinny Puppy at a recent horror movie convention (Horror Hound Weekend in Columbus, Ohio) about the nature and origin of the infamous Phoenix Lights unidentified flying object phenomena. After a couple of good chats with Ogre, it seemed like a good time to write something aggressive, analog, and old-school.

This track also marks the first with the new Paisley Babylon theremin, which was added to the gear roster earlier this week.

A video sculpture or similarly-intentioned visuals are pending for this track, it will be posted here when it’s ready…if you’re interested in licensing this track for a film project or other visual art, please feel free to get in touch: jwallace(at) turntabling (dot) net.

Paisley Babylon Video: “French Kissing Jack Kervorkian”

May 1, 2012 Audio No Comments

On the Chicago electronic/experimental/noise/ambient music compilation, Electronic Sadism, there’s a track featuring Paisley Babylon VS. Auditorture called French Kissing Jack Kervorkian. Strangely, it’s credited only to Auditorture at Amazon.com, but no matter.

What counts here is that this lovely experimental video sculpture is the official music video for French Kissing Jack Kervorkian. Shot and edited by Joe Wallace, this YouTube clip puts a bit of semi-abstract light sculpture to the Paisley Babylon/Auditorture track to good effect.

You can buy and download the album this track is featured on Electronic Sadism from Amazon.com.

Fans of Coil, Nurse With Wound, Stephen Stapleton, Throbbing Gristle, SPK and other early electronic/industrial/ambient and noise should definitely have a listen to the samples from the album there.

Paisley Babylon Soundtrack Music “Hallucinations In Space”

March 18, 2012 Audio No Comments

This Paisley Babylon soundtrack clip is composed for a sci-fi/horror film that doesn’t exist. Synopsis:

In 1975, the CIA and NASA were involved in research and testing of psychotropic drugs. The CIA wanted to know if certain hallucinogens could be used for advanced interrogation techniques, but NASA officials also wanted to know if such drugs could be used to combat the claustrophobic effects of long-haul space travel.

The most advanced space travel simulators were used, but NASA scientists could not be satisfied until two volunteers could be tested in an actual space environment.

The Paisley Babylon soundtrack clip here is heard during the sequence when the drugs are administered to a test subject in space. The test subject ingests the hallucinogens and tries to maintain control enough to report his experiences, but his mind is soon overwhelmed by nightmarish visions with freakish religious overtones…

Experience the hallucinations, download the Paisley Babylon track Hallucinations In Space.

Book DJ Paisley Babylon

I am currently available for DJ gigs at events, parties and art shows. Any occasion in need of a certain type of atmosphere makes a great DJ Paisley Babylon gig.

I am selective about my bookings--I don't do unlimited music selections "with everything from Jay-Z to Britney Spears". A DJ Paisley Babylon show is quite different. Listen to the mixes--if you need the sounds I curate and the atmospheres I create, please don't hesitate to get in touch. I have my own gear, and will travel.
